About Sustomi and beeswax food wrap

Hello there! Good to meet you. We love that you’ve popped by to check out Sustomi. The home of beeswax food wrap and other gorgeous, sustainable, reusable food storage goods.

So what are we all about? To take you right back to the beginning, our story began in the kitchen. Our founder, Bronwyn, was a little discontented with the amount of plastic and waste that comes out of the average kitchen. The average Australian throws away a whopping 650 kilograms of waste every year (which includes a lot of plastic) which is the second highest amount in the world, second only to the Unites States!

She wanted to create a product that would enable people to reduce their waste, minimise toxic-plastics and overall, help the environment.

Sustomi, and our beeswax food wraps, the sustainable alternative to plastic food wrap, was born!

What is it, and what are the advantages of beeswax food wraps?

Essentially, Sustomi wraps completely get rid of the need for plastic food wrap.

Plastic wrap is pretty nasty stuff; it can leak, risking food contamination, and it is one of the worst things on the planet for the environment.

Our beeswax food wraps keep a huge variety of food fresh, and are so easy to apply and wrap. You’ll never need to use plastic wrap again. They also make your kitchen, fridge and lunch box so much prettier, which is always a pleasing bonus!

Sustomi wraps also helps your pockets, as they save the need to buy plastic wrap.

If you love supporting local and small businesses as much as we do too, all our reusable food wraps are handmade locally in Tasmania, by Tasmanians.

What can I use my beeswax wrap for?

You can use your reusable beeswax food wraps for so many great things, from wrapping cheese and sandwiches, to fridge storage and covering a new loaf of bread!

Some of our other favourite usages include wrapping veggies and fruit, as an alternative to reusable plastic sandwich bags and reusable ziplock bags, for baked goods, reusable bowl covers, large leafy greens, nuts and small snacks, storing food in the freezer (just make sure it is thawed before removing the cover) and much more.

A favourite with our customers is to use our beeswax wraps as eco-friendly sandwich wraps; your family will love unpacking their wrap when lunch time arrives; they are a real treat!

How to use your food wrap

Bought your first wrap? Simply use the warmth of your hands to shape the wrap around your food. As it is mainly beeswax, the softness of your wrap adjusts with the temperature (really clever stuff). Your warmth allows it to soften, become a little stickier, so it sticks to itself and smooth surfaces, like a glass or ceramic bowl.

In between uses, wash your wrap to make sure it lasts for a long time.

How to clean you beeswax food wrap

It’s time for a clean! Simply take a damp cloth and wipe your food wrap clean, or alternatively, rinse it off under warm or cold water. Let it air dry, then it is ready to go again, and again!

How long will my reusable food wrap last for?

The life span of your beeswax food wrap depends on how often you use it and how well you look after it. Take care of your wrap and it will last around 6-12 months, or longer. It’s worth looking after.

Is there anything I can’t use my beeswax food wrap for?

The food wraps are great for so many things, but please avoid meats, liquids and hot things! This is because of the beeswax. Avoiding these will make your wraps last longer.

How is beeswax food wrap made?

All our beeswax food wraps are handmade in Tasmania. We support a local organisation who gives employment opportunities to disabled and disadvantaged people, who otherwise would not be able to find mainstream employment. Our beeswax food wraps are made from 100% cotton material, local Tasmanian bees wax, jojoba oil and natural tree resin. This combination makes a fine mix between adhesiveness, pliability and breathability (really great qualities!) making it ideal to cover your food.

What happened if the wax wears away?

You can re-melt the wax to freshen your wrap, or even add more wax to give it a longer lifespan! The fantastic thing about our wraps – especially the hemp wrap – is that they are purely made from natural ingredients, meaning you can pop them in the compost bin once you are finished. How about that for zero waste, hurrah!

Why is beeswax such a great material to use?

We love that our beeswax wraps help to raise awareness for the endangered honey bee. In September 2016, 7 types of bees were added to the US federal list of endangered and threatened species, which sadly means that are under threat globally. We can thank the honey bee for around one third of our entire food supply and it is incredibly important to protect the habitats of the little honey bees. We are proud and privileged to use their by-product in our food wraps! In addition, beeswax has natural antimicrobial properties, making it perfect for holding your food.

How can I buy beeswax food wrap?

Our beeswax food wraps are available in 4 sizes, and can be purchased in either coloured designs or natural hemp wraps, which are just as lovely as the other (we have a hard time deciding which to use, daily!). We offer different mixed pack varieties, meaning you can have a few of our favourite patterned wraps in your kitchen. Check out our shop, and treat yourself today. Happy wrapping!
