The kitchen is often the first place in the home where we start to reduce plastic waste and rightly so! But the bathroom is also often full of unnecessary plastic waste. Think about all those bottles – shampoo, conditioner, body wash, skin care, hair products, the list goes on! So, where to start reducing waste without compromising your routine? After all, you still need to get ready for the day as quickly as possible! We’ve got you covered.
5 Ways to Reduce Waste in Your Bathroom
ONE: Swap all the bottles in your shower for bars
The single most impactful way to ditch the waste in your bathroom is with plastic-free hair and skin care! But we’re not talking about your grandma’s Palmolive soap here. We’re talking about gorgeous, versatile and completely non-toxic beauty bars. There’s a bar for everything and some that do several things at once, for example shampoo and shaving or kids’ shampoo and bodywash.
Bars are a fantastic plastic-free alternative and tend to last for months! Simply store them on a soap dish (wood, ceramic or glass is best) and either apply directly to skin and hair or rub the bar between your hands to lather, then apply to your skin and hair. You will find a gorgeous range of hair and body bars on our website, including Amor Luminis, Australian Soap Company, Lotion Bar Co and Body of Nature. They smell as beautiful as they look!
TWO: Ditch those plastic disposables
Razors and toothbrushes, we’re looking at you! There are now so many fantastic earth-friendly options for both these items. For razors, we’re partial to Parker Safety Razors, which are handcrafted, easily cleaned and built to last, and Shark Razor Blade Refills and for sustainable toothbrushes, you can’t past bamboo! Our favourite bamboo toothbrush brands are: Toothy and Go Bamboo.
Imagine how much waste you’ll be saving when you’re not constantly throwing out plastic razors and toothbrushes – in Australia alone, 30 million toothbrushes end up in landfill every year! Bamboo toothbrushes are non-toxic, sustainable and biodegradable. They need to be replaced every couple of months, but can be composted or planted in the garden, as they will break down naturally. Just snap off the bristles first!
THREE: Replace single-use items with earth-friendly options
You know the ones: toilet paper, tissues, makeup remover pads, tampons and cotton buds. We’re spoilt for choice these days and it barely needs to disrupt our routine at all. Here’s our fave eco swaps:
Toilet paper: Who Gives A Crap – 100% recycled, non-toxic and so much other good stuff!
Tissues: Bring back the hanky! (Who Gives A Crap also make tissues)
Makeup Remover Pads: Face Halo – reusable, recyclable and non-toxic
Tampons and Pads: Lunette cup – easy to clean, easy to use, lasts for a few years and made from super soft, medical-grade silicon (BPA free)!
Cotton buds: Go Bamboo – biodegradable, natural bamboo stick, pure cotton tips and a recycled cardboard sliding box make it so much better than the plastic ones!
FOUR: Upgrade to non-toxic toothpaste, skin care and makeup
We say it a lot, but it bears repeating: low-waste and low-tox go hand in hand. When we take better care of ourselves, we also take better care of the earth. The most impactful items to switch out first are the essentials: deodorant and toothpaste. It makes sense – we use them the most and they tend to have the most chemicals.
Non-toxic, plastic-free deodorant that actually works can be hard to find! That’s why we have two fantastic options for you: SUSTOMi Natural Deodorant and My Shay Natural Deodorant, which comes in two sizes and three blends. Both are plastic-free, vegan, non-toxic, 100% natural and will keep you fresh all day!
Non-toxic, plastic-free toothpaste has also come a long way! We love Crush and Brush Toothpaste Tablets – they come in a glass jar and, as the name suggests, you put a tablet in your mouth, crush it and brush. Yep, it’s as fun as it sounds!
Once you’ve made these swaps, move on to the rest of your skin care and makeup as you run out. Our favourite natural skin care range is Lotion Bar Co and for low-tox makeup we love Hanami. There is also always the option of making your own skin care! Check out The Inspired Little Pot to get, well, inspired!
FIVE: Give your cleaning items a plastic-free, green makeover
It’s not only plastic that pollutes the environment! Toxic substances are also a major culprit. And it it’s not good for the earth, think what it must be doing to your body. Yikes. Well, that can change now! We know in the past, cleaning without chemicals has been less than effective, especially for places like the toilet and shower, but this is the future and we definitely have some pretty good options now! You will find all our favourite plastic-free, non-toxic cleaning brands on our website and, as we mentioned above, natural DIY cleaning is also an option – The Inspired Little Pot has you covered here too!
So many simple options for going low-waste and low-tox in your bathroom! Whether you want to do an overnight overhaul or take it easy one step at a time, we know you’re going to love your new waste-free bathroom oasis. Breathe in the zen.
